Obituary – Sister Maria del Rey Carvajal, C.S.J.

Sister Maria del Rey Carvajal, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 57 years, died July 13 in Good Shepherd Hospice.

She entered the congregation from San Jorge parish, Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1955. She earned a bachelor’s degree in human services from New York State University in Westbury, L.I., and studied in the field of social services at Fordham University.

Her ministries included St. Agnes, Boerum Hill, 1958-60; St. Augustine, Park Slope, 1960-62; Academia San Jose, San German, Puerto Rico, 1962-65; St. James, Downtown Brooklyn, 1965-68; Our Lady of Lourdes, Bushwick, 1968-69; Colegio San Conrado, Ponce, Puerto Rico, 1969-70; Academia San Jorge, Puerto Rico, 1970-72; and the Catholic Charities Migrant Program, Rockville Centre Diocese, 1972-91.

She was a librarian at Our Lady of Sorrows, Corona, 1991-92, and she was involved in parish outreach in SS. Joachim and Anne, Queens Village, 1992-99. She also served as director of human services at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Astoria, before her retirement in 2000.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
