Obituary – Sister Janet Whelan, C.S.J.

Sister Janet Whelan, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 74 years, died July 13 in St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood.

She entered the congregation from Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish, Sunset Park. She attended St. John’s College, and Providence College, R.I., where she received a master’s degree in theology.

Formerly known as Sister Raymond Maria, she served as a teacher at St. Martin of Tours, Bushwick, 1940-41; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria, 1943-49; Our Lady of Victory, Floral Park, 1945-50; St. Rose of Lima, Parkville, 1950-53; Academy of St. Joseph H.S., Brentwood, 1953-57; principal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria, 1967-68; regional superior, St. Joseph Generalate, 1968-75; and in religious education at Our Lady of Grace, West Babylon, 1975-2009.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
