Msgr. Edward D. Alleyne, “Father Lawrence,” of Cherry Hill, N.J., died Aug. 25 at the age of 88.

He had been living  at the Sacred Heart Residence for Priests and St. Mary’s Catholic Home, Cherry Hill.

Born in Brooklyn, he studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and Divine Savior Seminary, Lanham, Md.

He was ordained a priest of the Salvatorian Order on June 4, 1960 in Washington, D.C.

He was a Salvatorian until 1967 when he received his first assignment in the Camden Diocese as associate pastor of Queen of the Apostles, Pennsville, N.J. In July of 1971, then-Father Alleyne was incardinated as a priest of the Camden Diocese.

He was pastor at St. Monica, Atlantic City, for nine years before returning to Queen of Heaven, Cherry Hill, in 1993 as pastor until his retirement in 2003.

He served as a member of the Diocesan Board of Education regional vocation coordinator, director of Parkside Community Center, regional moderator of Camden PTA and a member of the Commission for Social Justice, Diocesan Priest Council and Diocesan Ecumenical Commission.

He also served as chairman of the Priest Personnel Board, director of the Office for Black Ministry, Presbyteral and the Special Committee on Pastors. In 1991, he was named a monsignor.

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
