Obituary: Father James W. Bukofksy

Father James W. Bukofksy, former pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Bedford-Stuyvesant, died Aug. 1 at Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island. He was 70.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Sylvester’s Church, Medford, L.I.

The main celebrant was Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto. Father Edward Keally of Rockville Centre was the homilist.

A native of Manhattan, he attended the Kilroe Seminary of the Sacred Heart, Honesdale, Pa., and Sacred Heart Monastery, Hales Corner, Wis. He was ordained as a priest of the Sacred Heart on Sept. 4, 1971 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. Luke’s Church, Whitestone.

He served as an assistant at Blessed Sacrament, Jackson Heights, 1977-79; Most Precious Blood, Long Island City, 1979-85; Our Lady of the Cenacle, Richmond Hill, 1985-88; St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, 1988-90; and Immaculate Conception, Astoria, 1990.

In the early 1990s, he served for a short time as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Most recently, he was ministering outside the diocese at St. Sylvester’s Church, Medford.

Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram, L.I.
