Obituary: Sister Helen Anne Ebbitt, R.S.M.

Sister Helen Anne Ebbitt, R.S.M., 83, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 65 years, died July 2 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended St. Jerome’s School, East Flatbush, and Bishop McDonnell M.H.S., Clinton Hill.

She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. John’s University, Jamaica, a master’s in American Studies from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J., and a PD in counseling from St. John’s University.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy in February, 1951 and professed her final vows on Sept. 5, 1956.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Ignatia, she taught in Holy Rosary, Brooklyn, 1953-55; St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1955-62; Queen of Angels, Sunnyside, 1962-64; St. Joseph the Worker, Patchogue, L.I., 1964-65; St. Patrick, Bay Shore, L.I., 1965-66; Holy Trinity D.H.S., Hicksville, L.I., 1966-71.

She was principal at St. Edward the Confessor, Syosset, L.I., 1971-80, and in St. Patrick’s, Huntington, L.I., 1982-97. From 1980 to 1982, she was a guidance counselor at St. Catharine’s Academy, Bronx.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.

Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
