Brother Lawrence Makofske, OSF, a Franciscan Brother of Brooklyn for 66 years, entered Eternal Life peacefully on Nov. 3, 2023, at age 84. 

Brother Lawrence was born Nov. 10, 1939, and entered the Franciscan Brothers from Sacred Heart Parish, Cambria Heights, Queens. 

While a student at St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn he entered St. Anthony’s Juniorate. In 1968 he completed a bachelor’s degree in science from St. Francis College and continued his studies at Villanova University, graduating with a master’s degree in management. 

In 1990 Brother Lawrence completed a cer tificate program in spirituality and human development at the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico. 

Brother Lawrence’s apostolic ministries included teaching at St. Joseph’s, Babylon, New York; St. Peter’s School, Greenville, North Carolina; and St. Francis Prep in Queens. 

With his management skills and knowledge, he served as plant director at St. Francis Prep and St. Anthony’s High School. 

Brother Lawrence worked for the Diocese of Rockville Centre in the finance depar tment and was administrator of Madonna Heights, a nonprofit organization in Dix Hills, New York. 

Brother was a lifelong educator and administrator while serving in various ministries. 

In 1997, Brother Lawrence was appointed director of Camp Alvernia, Centerpor t, New York, where he was much admired by staff and brothers until his retirement. 

Brother Lawrence is survived by his beloved sister, Marie Ryan, and her husband Larry and their family. He is also survived by his brother, Raymond Makofske and family, and his Franciscan Brothers. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Robert Holz on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 53 Prospect Road, Centerport, NY 11721. Interment was at Holy Rood
