Sister Sharon Kelly, RSM, died suddenly on April 22 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone.
For the past two years, she was the recreational director for the residents at this retirement home.
Raised by loving parents, William and Carolyn Kelly, in Hicksville, New York, she attended Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School and Holy Trinity High School, both in Hicksville.
Forty one years ago, she entered the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community in Brooklyn.
Sister Sharon brought many talents with her, which she shared freely with her Sisters as well as her students at Mercy High School in Riverhead, New York, and Catherine McAuley High School in Brooklyn.
She received both B.A. degrees in psychology and in music from Molloy College and an M.A. in reading education from Dowling College.
She served the Diocese of Brooklyn as organist in several parishes as the need arose.
Her beautiful voice filled the chapel as she led the hymns at Mass.
She immersed herself in every possible way in communal life and, in doing so, brought joy to all she encountered.
She was truly a gift in every sense of the word to the Sisters with whom she lived.
She is survived by her sister, Lorraine Sullivan (Brendan); brothers James (Patrice), Thomas (Margaret), Steven (Margaret), Ed (Sarah), Ken (Alex), Bill (Stephanie); and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Holy Trinity Church, Whitestone, and burial was in St. Charles/Resurrection Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.
