Msgr. John W. Maloney, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, was born June 4, 1949, in New York, ordained to the priesthood on April 19, 1975, and died Thursday, February 2, 2023. 

Monsignor Maloney served the Diocese of Brooklyn as pastor of the parishes of Saint Anselm (Brooklyn), Our Lady of Light (Saint Albans), and Saint Mary Magdalene (Springfield Gardens). 

He also served as episcopal vicar for Queens South and parochial vicar for the Parish of Saint Pascal Baylon (Saint Albans) and was in residence at the Parish of Our Lady of Angels (Brooklyn). 

On March 1, 2007, Msgr. Maloney was named Prelate of Honor to His Holiness. He also served on the Diocesan Review Board from 2015- 2022. 

“He thoroughly enjoyed preaching,” said Msgr. Kevin Noone, who was pastor of Our Lady of Angels when Msgr. Maloney was pastor of the neighboring Brooklyn parish, St. Anselm. “In his homilies, he challenged and encouraged his listeners to let Scripture shape their lives.” 

A funeral Mass for Msgr. Maloney was celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Saint Anselm R.C Church, Brooklyn. 

The principal celebrant was Bishop Robert Brennan, the homilist was Msgr. Noone and special concelebrants were Msgr. Michael J. Phillips, Father Anthony Alimnonu, and Father John Hwang. 

Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village, New York.
