Sister Maurita
Sister Maurita

Sister Maurita McMahon, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 68 years, died Jan. 22 at Mount St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Mass. She was 88.

Locally, she served as a first-grade teacher at Resurrection-Ascension School, Rego Park, 1945-51. She spent the remainder of her teaching career ministering in Massachusetts. In 2000, she retired to Mount St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Diana McMahon.

Burial was in St Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.

Sister Consuela

Sister Consuela Fox, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, died Jan. 9 at the Mercy Center, Dallas, Pa.

Born Ellen Fox, she attended St. Agatha School, Sunset Park, and Mercy Juniorate H.S., Brooklyn, after which she entered the Brooklyn Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in 1944. She professed her final vows on March 15, 1950.

 She taught in Brooklyn at the Convent of Mercy, Fort Greene, 1947-52; St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1956-59; Holy Rosary, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1961-63; and Bishop McDonnell H.S., Crown Heights, 1963-64. From 1965 to 1968, she was principal of Holy Rosary School.

A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated Jan. 13 by her cousins, Fathers Francis Bradley of the Diocese of Derry, Northern Ireland, and Patrick Buckley of Red Hook, at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.

 

Sister Marguerite Relihan, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, died Jan. 18 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, L.I.

Born Gertrude, she attended St. Thomas Aquinas School, Flatlands, and Mercy Juniorate H.S., Brooklyn. She entered the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in 1941 and professed final vows on March 10, 1948.

In Brooklyn, she taught at the Convent of Mercy, Fort Greene, 1945; St. Jerome, Flatbush, 1945-47; Sacred Heart, Fort Greene, 1947-48; Holy Rosary, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1951-56; St. Therese of Lisieux, East Flatbush, 1956-57; and St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1962-65.

She also taught at St. Mary’s Home, Syosset, L.I., 1948-51, and St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, 1957-62.

She was the librarian at Catherine McAuley H.S., Flatbush, 1965-81; served in the Mercy Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch, L.I., 1981-83; and was secretary in the religious education office at St. Mary Mother of Jesus, Bensonhurst, 1983-84. She served as pastoral care minister at the Convent of Mercy from 1984 until her retirement in 1995.

Burial was in the family plot in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.

Carmella Guastella

Carmella Guastella, 79, the wife  for 58 years of Deacon Louis Guastella, died Jan. 23 in Las Vegas, where they have been living.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 4 at St. Viator’s Church, Las Vegas. Burial was in Ocean View Cemetery, Staten Island.

A native of Brooklyn, she also is survived by her sister, Jennie.

Deacon Guastella, who was ordained in March of 1984, served at  Our Lady of Miracles, Canarsie, and St. Catherine of Genoa, Flatbush. After moving to Las Vegas, he ministered at Our Lady of Las Vegas, St. Christopher’s and Prince of Peace.
