NY Auxiliary Bishop Retires

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Gerald T. Walsh of New York, who reached the normal retirement age of 75 in April.

Bishop Walsh was serving as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of New York.

Born in Manhattan, he attended Power Memorial Academy; Iona College in New Rochelle; and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Yonkers, before ordination in 1967 by Cardinal Francis J. Spellman at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

In 1996, he was named secretary to Cardinal John J. O’Connor. He also served as Vicar for Development before 2004 when he was appointed as an auxiliary bishop.
