New Evangelization Is The Talk of the Bishops

Cisneros

Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros of Brooklyn, left, and Auxiliary Bishop Nelson J. Perez of Rockville Centre, L.I., center, chat with Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City during a gathering of bishops and Church leaders at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City Nov. 16. The leaders from the Americas met Nov. 16-19 to discuss the new evangelization in the Americas. The bishops acknowledged Pope Francis is helping with the new evangelization, causing people to take another look at the Catholic Church. “He really has captured the imagination of people,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, the new president of the U.S. Bishops Conference, who says he is often approached in airports with questions about Pope Francis and has heard six confessions while waiting for planes. “Obviously he’s spoken about seeing the person first, accompanying the person, warming hearts, healing wounds; these are things that strike a chord in all of us,” he said.
