Beware of the Latest AI Scams

Dear Editor: As senior citizens with grandchildren, we are urging all grandparents to be aware of the latest scam criminals have cooked up to rob them of thousands or more dollars.

Through the use of a high-tech scam that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to find their grandchildren’s voices on TikTok and then use voice-cloning software to make panicked calls pretending to be that grandchild, saying that they have been arrested or hurt and urgently need bail money or medical funds.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catatina confirmed that his department has been seeing a growing number of these cases and urges other counties to be alert in their areas.

He also advises families to establish a “safe word” or code in case of emergencies to use to confirm the identity of the person who is calling.

We urge all readers to pass this information on to all their friends and family members.

Thank You for Your Sensitivity

Dear Editor: I want to thank you for your very thoughtful editorial this week (“The Complexities of Faith and Justice,” June 7) concerning the recent Supreme Court non-decision regarding the St. Isidore Catholic charter school case.

Of course, as Catholics, we would have welcomed a decision on a par with overturning Roe v. Wade: one that ended what we felt was discrimination against us just because we were asking for state support.

I especially appreciate the understanding, treatment, and sympathy that you showed for Justice Coney Barrett. She must have known, or at least had a sense, that her recusal decision would hurt the school’s chances to get a favorable decision from the court, and would cause some Catholics to blame her for the loss.

But she did feel that she had too many entanglements with those involved in the case, and it didn’t involve a matter of pure morality like abortion, so she did the principled thing.

Good for her.
