Offering Diversified Instruction in Jamaica Estates
At Immaculate Conception Catholic Academy (ICCA), Jamaica Estates, students receive diversified instruction. From the academically gifted to those who need general and special education services, ICCA has the resources to help every child reach his or her full potential.
“In addition to being proud of our New York State test scores and the achievements of our graduates, we firmly believe in the importance of specialty subjects and extra-curricular activities,” said Dorothea Breen, principal.
Every student at ICCA takes part in physical education, music, library and computer lab. For those students seeking extracurricular opportunities, ICCA offers (dependent on the grade level) chorus, band, multimedia, architecture and drama club.
The academy is especially proud of its Aquinas Honor Society. In the 12 years of its existence, it has garnered local, national and international prestige winning several grants, receiving many awards, citations and proclamations. Among its accomplishments are publishing three historical books through Arcadia Publishing and erecting historical markers throughout Queens.
The academy is grateful to its gracious alumni, who offer their support to the school. Chris Cuomo, television journalist, has made five visits to the school to interview students about current events. Lawrence Waterhouse has been especially supportive by establishing and furnishing the computer lab with state-of-the-art equipment.
The academy is also grateful to the parents who have helped through the years. These devoted volunteers have made and continue to make ICCA a vibrant learning institution. As a testament to their efforts, enrollment continues to expand. The school hopes to open three additional classrooms in new buildings being constructed in the lower schoolyard.
The development of students into committed Catholics, while at the same time respecting the religious beliefs and practices of non-Catholic students, is a priority of the parish staff, administration and faculty. To this end, ICCA is also focused on the virtue of service. Seventh-grade students (preparing for Confirmation) volunteer every day for five months, and the entire student body participates in mission events on a monthly basis.
