It’s official: Pope Leo XIV will travel to Latin America in two weeks. Doctors have given him the green light following his lung surgery to go on tour from Nov. 6 to 17 in Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.
Dr. Luigi Carbone has confirmed that the Holy Father’s recovery after the surgery is continuing.
Based on his current clinical status there are no contraindications that would prevent him from undertaking his upcoming apostolic journey to Latin America as planned.
The Holy See Press Office confirmed that the Apostolic Journey will proceed according to a previously published program.
The long-awaited visit had been put on hold, and there were even doubts as to whether the pontiff would be able to travel.
Just a few days ago his medical team had advised him not to go to Assisi, where he was scheduled to travel by helicopter on Oct. 27.

They argued that it was a precautionary measure, since very little time had passed since his surgery on Oct. 13 at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where the lower lobe of his right lung was removed.
The surgery to remove the cancer was a success.
Pope Leo XIV will not need any additional treatment. In fact, over the past week, he has continued with his daily schedule, which is filled with private and public meetings at the Vatican.
For Pope Leo XIV, this trip to Latin America will be very special, especially when he sets foot in Peru, where he served as a missionary and bishop. The pontiff shared this on his social media accounts.
“It fills me with joy to return to the continent where I have spent so many moments of my life,” the Holy Father said. “May this trip be an opportunity to open our hearts to one another, strengthen our fellowship as brothers and sisters, and renew our commitment to proclaim the Gospel with joy.”
In addition to Peru, there is also great anticipation in Uruguay, the first stop of his trip. Tickets for a vigil being held in the capital city have already sold out.
In Argentina, where Pope Leo XIV will walk the same streets as his predecessor, Pope Francis, excitement is also building.
Everything is practically ready for what will undoubtedly be one of the greatest moments of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate.
