Former NCEA President Dead at 81

OBIT-SrKHartiganRSMSister Kieran Hartigan, R.S.M., 81, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 63 years, died Feb. 26.

Born in Glen Cove, L.I., she attended St. Patrick’s School, Glen Cove, and Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1950 and professed her final vows on March 14, 1956.

She taught in St. Patrick’s, Kent Ave., Fort Greene, 1953-54; Holy Innocents, Flatbush, 1954-56; St. Mary’s, Roslyn, L.I., 1956-50; St. Mary’s, Balboa, Panama, 1959-64; and Catherine McAuley H.S., East Flatbush, 1964-65.

She was principal of St. Pius X, Plainview, L.I., 1968-72, and Our Lady of Mercy Academy, 1972-80, and as co-principal, 1998-2002.

She was assistant executive director of St. Mary’s Home, Syosset, 1982-83; associate superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, L.I., 1983-89; and superintendent of schools, 1989-93.

She served as an associate dean at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, L.I., 1994-98, and was an adjunct professor at St. Joseph’s College, Patchogue, L.I. She also served as president of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA).

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. Burial followed in Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, L.I.,
