Father Mychal Judge Memorial Award

Presented in memory of Father Mychal Judge, O.F.M. The Franciscan priest and chaplain of the New York City Fire Department was a source of spiritual inspiration to New York’s Bravest. He gave his life ministering to others on Sept. 11, 2001.

Msgr. Martin T. Geraghty, a priest of the Brooklyn Diocese for over 50 years, is receiving the Father Mychal Judge Memorial Award. He has served as pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Church, Bayside, since 2006.

Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. Francis Xavier School, Park Slope; Cathedral Prep; Cathedral College; St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, Md.; and North American College, Rome.

On Dec. 16, 1964, he was ordained to the priesthood at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome by Bishop Francis F. Reh.

He served as an assistant at St. Elizabeth, Ozone Park, 1965, and St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights, 1965-68; and then was assigned to the faculty of Cathedral College, Douglaston, where he taught from 1970 to 1988.

In 1988, he became pastor of St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, and served there until 2006. He was named a monsignor in 1990.

He served as chairman of the diocesan Catholic-Jewish Relations Committee, was the first director of the Diocesan Language School and served as chaplain to the NYPD Emerald Society.

He traces his Irish roots to Westport, County Mayo.
