A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 8 for Father Robert J. Frueh, a senior priest of the diocese, at St. Saviour’s Church, Park Slope.

He died Sunday, Oct. 2, at the age of 84.

Born in Brooklyn and baptized in Blessed Sacrament Church, Cypress Hills, he attended NYU; Mount St. Mary’s College, Ky.; and Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md. He did graduate work in counseling at Fordham University.

Prior to entering college, he served with the U.S. Army in Korea, from 1952 to 1954.

He was ordained June 1, 1963 by Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.

He served as an assistant at St. Catherine of Genoa, Brooklyn, 1963; St. Pius X, Rosedale, 1963-70; and St. Vincent de Paul, Williamsburg, 1970-75.

He was named chaplain at Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope, in 1975 and served there until 1980.

He then worked as a Catholic Charities counselor at the Astoria Human Services Center, 1980-85, and the Corona-Elmhurst Guidance Center, 1985-87.

From 1987 to 2012, he was chaplain at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Flatbush.

He lived in retirement at St. Saviour’s rectory, Park Slope.

Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto was the main celebrant of the funeral Mass. Special concelebrants included Fathers Frank Spacek, Kevin Cavalluzzi and Paul Morrissey, O.S.A., who preached the homily.

“Father Bob was kind, gentle and considerate. He was measured and wise, but also deeply practical,” said Erin Rother who is active in youth ministry at the parish.

“He was a listener and a bit of a radical! He deeply loved Christ and his Catholic faith, and radiated that love to the people around him. He was an instrumental and integral part of our youth group.

“I think he delighted in our group, and the vibrancy and openness of our discussions and prayers. He was an exceptional man and an exceptional priest. And he was one of the youngest souls I have ever met.”

Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
