English Cursillo Movement Holds Communion-Breakfast in Queens

The English-speaking Cursillo community of Brooklyn and Queens celebrated a Communion-breakfast at the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston, with 129 Cursillistas in attendance.

They renewed friendships that have lasted through the years since their Cursillo weekends at Humboldt Street, Greenpoint; St. John’s Prep, Astoria; the Immaculate Conception Center; St. Josephat’s, Glen Cove, L.I.; Nazareth Retreat House, Flatbush; or St. Joseph’s Retreat House, Brentwood, L.I.

The celebrant of the Mass was Father Joseph Holcomb, pastor of St. Andrew Avellino, Flushing, and former spiritual director of the Cursillo for 12 years when it was located in Greenpoint. Concelebrants were Msgr. Jack Waldron and Father Bob Blauvelt, to whom Father Holcomb referred to as “giants” for their contribution to the early formation of the English Cursillo program.

The guest speaker was Sister Mary Geraghty, C.S.J., former director of the Women’s Cursillo on Humboldt Street and a pillar of the English Cursillo movement.

The English Cursillo community continues to grow and to thrive. Anyone who is interested in knowing more about themselves, enriching their relationship with others and strengthening their relationship with God can consider making a Cursillo Weekend, which are scheduled throughout the year.

Ultreyas (follow-up gatherings) are held monthly at Holy Trinity, Whitestone; Our Lady of Victory, Floral Park, L.I.; and SS. Peter and Paul, Manorville, L.I.
