Edward P. Scharfenberger, of Warwick, N.Y., formerly of Ridgewood, died Jan. 21 at his home. He was 94. He was the father of Bishop Edward Scharfenberger of Albany.
Born in Brooklyn, was married for 68 years to Elaine (Magdal) Scharfenberger.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper and a First Lieutenant in field artillery and was a member of American Legion Post 214 in Warwick.
He worked in the family business, Ecclesiastical Art Co., with his father and brothers before earning his law degree. As an attorney, he worked for Ticor in Forest Hills, retiring in 1985 and was a member of the American Bar Association. After retirement, he was a professor at St. John’s University until 1989. He was a founding member of the Warwick Taxpayers Association.
He was a lifelong champion of Catholic education.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Warwick; his children: Bishop Scharfenberger; daughter, Miriam Muse of Warwick; son, James Scharfenberger of Warwick; son, Dr. Dennis Scharfenberger, of Warwick; and daughter, Lois Sheptuck of Edison, N.J.
Burial was in St. Stephen Cemetery, Warwick.
