DVD and Blu-ray Capsule Reviews

By John Mulderig

NEW YORK (CNS) — The following are capsule reviews from Catholic News Service (CNS) of new and recent video releases available on DVD and/or Blu-ray — as well as for online viewing. These classifications refer to the theatrical version of the films, and do not take into account extra content.

“Captive” (2015)

Honorable but slack drama, based on real events, in which an escaped prisoner (David Oyelowo) on a murderous rampage takes a drug-addicted diner waitress (Kate Mara) hostage in her home. As the woman struggles to stay alive, she reads sections of Rick Warren’s self-help best-seller, “The Purpose Driven Life,” to her captor, hoping he’ll recognize the positive choices still available to him.

Stylized but potentially disturbing gunplay and other violence, including the implicit threat of rape, narcotics use, at least one crass term. Spanish language and titles options. The CNS classification is A-III – adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 – parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. (Paramount Home Entertainment; also on Blu-ray)

“Hotel Transylvania 2” (2015)

When Dracula’s daughter (voice of Selena Gomez) and her human husband (voice of Andy Samberg) become parents, the count (voice of Adam Sandler), who originally opposed but now accepts their union, reverts to his intolerant ways by insisting that their son (voice of Asher Blinkoff) must grow up to be a vampire. Returning director Genndy Tartakovsky reassembles the iconic monsters who hang out at the hostelry of the title for a weak and surprisingly violent follow-up to his 2012 animated comedy. Some potentially frightening dust-ups, mildly scatological images and wordplay. Spanish language and titles options.

The CNS classification is A-II – adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG – parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment; also on Blu-ray)
