“Sacred Encounters: Bridging Hope and Faith” is the theme of Calvary Hospital’s 10th annual Spiritual Care Day, Oct. 19. For the first time, the hospital will host this event with Fordham University’s Global Healthcare Innovation Management Center and the Collaborative for Palliative Care.
The day will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fordham’s Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan. Speakers will include Calvary Hospital’s Dr. Michael J. Brescia; Sister Kathleen Deignan, C.N.D., Ph.D., Iona College; and Mark P. Freeman, Ph.D., College of the Holy Cross.
Experts will lead workshops on topics such as: mindfulness/complementary clinical modalities; sacred space/concept of home for patients near the end of life; research concepts: spirituality and healthcare outcomes; psychological suffering and delirium at the end of life; and pain management.
Doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains/pastoral care providers in all settings, and other health care professionals are welcome.

Five HeartShare residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities were driven from their group home in Staten Island, when it was gutted in a fire last month. The home will require major rehabilitation due to water and smoke damage. The women who lived there are now in temporary housing. Repairs may take over six months said Linda Tempel, HeartShare executive director.
The women lost all clothing and personal items in the fire. Before temperatures drop, the women need to replace their winter coats, shoes, boots and accessories.
HeartShare estimates it will cost $50,000 to replace the five ladies’ essential items as well as cover costs for their temporary housing.

“Following the Pathway to Love” is the theme of an upcoming talk to be given by Bryan Mercier Oct. 1. Sponsored by the Catholic Fellowship of NYC, the talk begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Innocents in Manhattan. Mercier’s talk will focus on four levels of love: attraction, desire, goodwill and marital love as well as discuss some common pitfalls in dating and what it takes to reach happily-ever-after. Our Lady of the Snows School in North Floral Park closed in June, and reopened as Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy Sept. 1. Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto visited the parish and academy to celebrate its new beginning with Mass on Sept. 13. The bishop also blessed and installed the new safety patrol. The student group is responsible for monitoring hallways and parking lot during arrival and dismissal times.
