A Mass of Christian Burial for Deacon Daniel J. Marley was celebrated March 6 at St. Columba Church, Marine Park. He died March 2 in hospice care at home. He was 82.
Auxiliary Bishop James Massa was the main celebrant of the funeral Mass. Concelebrants included Father Timothy Lambert. Father Patrick West, former pastor at Our Lady of Solace, Coney Island, where Deacon Marley once served, preached the homily.
Father West, currently the pastor of Corpus Christi, Woodside, said, “I first met him in 2001 which doesn’t seem that long ago. Deacon Daniel Marley’s major focus was visiting the sick, which he did a couple days a week. He always wanted to reach out to as many people as possible.
“He was a very spiritual guy. He was up at four a.m. most days and prayed for hours. Wherever he went, he brought the life of Christ with him,” Father West said.
“He loved his family, his wife, children and grandchildren. He truly showed the depth of God’s love in everything he did and everyone he met.”
He was ordained Dec. 2, 1978 in the second class of deacons ordained for the diocese. He was first assigned to Good Shepherd, Marine Park, and later to Our Lady of Solace.
He also served as a chaplain at Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
He is survived by his wife, Ann of Brooklyn, and their daughters, Erin Mallon of Brooklyn, and Kelly Marley of Los Angeles, Calif.
