Though the police officers did not allow anyone to go on the street to start the J’Ouvert portion of the West Indian Day Carnival Celebration until 3 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 3, Catholics started celebrating on Sunday afternoon in St. Matthew Church on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights.

Fire Lieutenant Kevin C. Dowdell died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He was one of 18 Ancient Order of Hibernians members from New York and New Jersey who lost their lives that tragic day.

Gearing Up for Second Round Of Summer Sing in Forest Hills

Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills hosted its first of two Summer Sings in Queens featuring Mozart’s Requiem on Aug. 16. The Forest Hills Choir, in conjunction with the Queens Oratorio Society and Schola Sine Nomine, sponsored the event. The requiem was co-conducted by local, accomplished maestros, David Close and Ben Arendsen.
