Molloy’s O’Grady Taken by Padres

The San Diego Padres selected former Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, right-handed pitcher Dennis O’Grady out of Duke University, Durham, N.C., in the 34th round of the MLB Draft.
“When my name came up, your heart kind of jumps a little bit,” says O’Grady, who was surrounded by family and friends when the pick was made.
O’Grady played baseball and basketball for legendary coach Jack Curran, who recently completed his 53rd season coaching both sports.
“This is what he’s (O’Grady) wanted and aimed for, and he finally got drafted so that’s great,” said Curran.
Ironically, O’Grady will now be teammates with former rival Karmas on the Eugene Emeralds.

CK’s Downing Drafted by Dodgers

Former Christ the King Regional H.S., Middle Village, lefty hurler Gregg Downing was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 47th round.
The Franklin Pierce University, Concord, N.H., pitcher set the N.Y.C. record as a senior for the Royals, striking out 108 batters in 53.0 innings.
“He’s one of those ballplayers that you’d like to have nine of them on the field,” said Bill Ottenger, Christ the King head coach.
