Back to School 2014 – Cristo Rey: A School Works in Brooklyn

Cristo Rey Brooklyn is a Catholic high school that educates young people of limited economic means and all religions to become men and women of faith, purpose and service. As part of the national Cristo Rey network of schools, the school is committed to providing under-represented urban youth with a quality, college preparatory education. By offering a rigorous curriculum, a unique work-study experience and the support of an inclusive school community, Cristo Rey prepares its students to succeed in college and beyond with the values essential to a fulfilling life.

Since its founding six years ago, Cristo Rey has realized tremendous growth and success – 100 percent college acceptance rates for its initial graduating classes, record scholarships and grants, growth of extracurricular and athletic programs and a Corporate Work Study Program that ranks amongst the highest in the nationwide Cristo Rey Network. Additionally, the school relocated last summer to its current facility in Flatbush, which has given it the resources to offer the full, robust college-prep education it aspires to provide all of its students.

The building now boasts a 500-seat auditorium, commercial kitchen and cafeteria, gymnasium, library, chapel, science and technology labs and more. It also provides the school with the capacity to grow its enrollment and more fully serve those communities and families that desire a small, private, faith-based education but cannot otherwise afford one.

As a school dedicated to serving families who generally aren’t able to pay for private school education, Cristo Rey Brooklyn has a maximum tuition of $200 per month. However, 90 percent of the families receive additional scholarships to support their education, leaving the average family paying $100 per month for their education. This is significantly lower than the next cheapest-charging private school, which charges around $600 per month.

Visit the school’s fall open house on Nov. 15 from 12 to 3 p.m. where families will have the opportunity to tour the school, hear more about the programs and meet current students.
