The ordination of a bishop is always a joyous occasion. This past Monday afternoon was no different when two Brooklyn priests – Father James Massa and Witold Mroziewski – were ordained to the episcopacy. Diocesan functions are something like a reunion. There are many people you see only at such events when all the various segments of the diocese are represented.

Sisters Continue to Plant Seeds of Hope
When Pope Francis published his encyclical Laudato Si’, about caring for all of God’s creation, members of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, were ecstatic. The pope’s words reinforced something that they have been doing for years at their motherhouse in Brentwood, L.I. Two of the sisters, Mary Lou Buser, and Heather Ganz, who happens to be the youngest member of the Order, maintain and nourish a Garden Ministry that was begun in 1986.

A Perfect Father’s Day For Hero Cop’s Dad
It was a Happy Father’s Day for Joseph Gugliara. He knew he was fortunate to have his 24-year-old son Filippo at his side when they attended the 10 a.m. Mass at St. Athanasius Church, Bensonhurst. Filippo is the 24-year-old transit police officer who had been stabbed earlier in the week in Brooklyn while trying to make an arrest.

Thankful For Diocesan Roots
When Father Bill Galvin joined the Maryknoll Fathers in 1955, he wanted to be a missionary in China. But it wasn’t until 1999 that he finally arrived in the mainland Asian country, after assignments in the Philippines, Nepal and the Holy Land. Cause for Bishop Ford’s Sainthood Moves Slowly
Someday, the late Bishop Francis X. Ford will be declared a saint, but no one thinks it will happen soon. “It’s a moving, alive process,” says Father Raymond Finch, M.M., the Brooklyn-born Superior General of Maryknoll. “Now, can I tell you exactly where and how long it’s gonna be? Can’t. Different things happen at different moments, some steps are taken and some steps take a little longer.”
