While hundreds of priests may appear at major diocesan functions, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a clergy shortage. The number of senior priests reaching retirement age far outnumbers the number of younger men being ordained to staff parishes.

When the decrease in the number of diocesan priests reached critical levels, Bishop DiMarzio also reached out to religious orders and asked them to staff some parishes, particularly ethnic parishes where groups like the Polish Vincentians and the South America-based Divine Word priests and sisters have taken leadership roles…
