Any Room in the Inn?

Dear Editor: During a recent commute to Manhattan, I tuned into WNYC, a listener-supported radio station broadcast on 93.9 FM. A story about an Eritrean priest, Father Moses, and his ministry helping migrants enter the European Union engaged my attention.

In telling his story, Father Moses juxtaposed the memorable phrase recorded in Luke 2:7 about the “no room at the inn” to the countless families seeking haven in Europe as they escape war, torture and inhumane conditions across Africa and the Middle East.

“These families serve to remind us of Joseph and Mary,” Father Moses said. With expectant hearts, “they are seeking a safe haven,” but “finding no room at the inn.”

Father Moses’ story struck a chord that is too compelling to dismiss. Do the migrants plight strike a parallel? How does our faith direct us to respond?

In the context of the U.S. presidential campaign and immigration policy, and the plight of Syrians and many others from their countries to the Europe, and the pope’s comments to the media on his departure from his papal visit to Mexico, Faith compels me to open my ears to listen to the voice of our Lord Jesus Christ asking, “Do you have a place for me?”
