NEW YORK — New York City has stepped up security at synagogues across the five boroughs as Jewish New Yorkers celebrate the High Holy Days.
The observances began with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, on Sept. 11 and end with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day of the year, on Monday, Sept. 21.
There has been a rise in antisemitic incidents across the city in recent months.
City officials say there is no current or specific threat against Jewish people.

Rabbi Brad Hirschfield, president of the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, said the problem should concern people of all faiths.
He also offered advice to Catholics looking to help their “elder brothers in faith” during these times.
