On June 6, the Diocese of Brooklyn witnessed a moment of profound grace as Bishop Robert Brennan ordained Paul Zwolak to the priesthood at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James.
It was the first priestly ordination held in this historic mother church in 13 years. A homecoming that feels especially fitting in a diocese as vibrant and resilient as ours.
Father Zwolak, 27, brings with him the lived faith of a Queens Catholic formed in the heart of our local Church. Raised at Our Lady of Hope Parish in Middle Village, educated at Archbishop Molloy High School, where he ran cross-country and track, and shaped by studies at St. John’s University and the seminaries in Douglaston and Dunwoodie, he embodies the best of our tradition: rooted, energetic, and oriented toward service.
His desire to work with youth speaks directly to one of the great pastoral needs of our time. In a city where young people navigate competing voices and digital distractions, a priest who understands their world will be a powerful witness to Christ.
In an age that often treats the priesthood as an anachronism, ordinations like this one quietly proclaim the opposite. The Church does not manufacture priests; it receives them as gifts from the Lord of the harvest. That the Diocese of Brooklyn, serving nearly 1.5 million Catholics across Brooklyn and Queens in one of the most diverse and densely populated regions in the country, will welcome a new priest is cause for celebration.
Even if he stands alone this year, his “yes” will echo the thousands of silent yeses offered by families, educators, and prayerful communities that sustain vocations.
The return to the Cathedral Basilica of St. James also carries symbolic weight. This sacred space, now beautifully renovated, has long been the spiritual heart of the diocese. To confer holy orders here again is to reconnect with our foundations while looking to the future.
It reminds us that the priesthood is not a relic of the past but a living sacrament configured to Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever.
As Father Zwolak prostrated himself before the altar and received the laying on of hands, the entire diocese was present in spirit. Every priest, deacon, religious, and layperson shared in the fruit of this ordination.
The hands that will soon consecrate the Eucharist and absolve sins in our parishes were first formed in our pews, our schools, and our homes.
Let this moment renew our prayer for vocations. Parents, speak openly and lovingly about the priesthood to your sons.
Parishes, continue to cultivate a culture in which young men can discern without pressure but with generous encouragement.
Young Catholics, do not be afraid to ask the Lord what he wants of your life. His plans are always more beautiful than our own.
As the Litany of Saints rises under the vaulted ceilings of St. James, we entrust Father Paul Zwolak to the intercession of Our Lady of Hope, St. James, and all the patron saints of this diocese.
May his priesthood bear abundant fruit for the salvation of souls in Brooklyn and Queens, and may many more follow in his footsteps.
