St. Joseph’s College, in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore, is pleased to announce that it will welcome Gabourey Sidibe to discuss her memoir, “This is Just My Face: Try Not To Stare,” in conversation with writer and actress Lena Dunham on Friday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. on the Clinton Hill campus. This event is part of the spring 2017 Brooklyn Voices lecture series.

“This event is special; both the author and the interlocutor represent two of the most authentic and unique voices in entertainment today,” said Barbara Garii, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs at SJC Brooklyn. “It will be fascinating to see how Sibide charted her course to stardom and to have it drawn out by one of this generation’s most iconic writers.”

Gabourey Sidibe skyrocketed to international fame in 2009 when she played the leading role in Lee Daniels’s acclaimed movie Precious, based upon Sapphire’s novel Push. In her new memoir, “This Is Just My Face: Try Not To Stare,” she shares a one-of-a-kind life story in a voice as fresh and challenging as many of the unique characters she’s played onscreen. Sidibe explores her Bed-Stuy/Harlem family life, and her unconventional rise to fame as a movie star, with self-knowing dispatches on friendship, depression, celebrity, race and weight.

Lena Dunham is the creator and star of the critically acclaimed HBO series Girls, for which she also served as executive producer, writer and director. She has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards and has won two Golden Globes, including Best Actress for her work on Girls. An accomplished author, Dunham’s book of personal essays, Not That Kind of Girl, was published by Random House in 2014 and was a number one NY Times best seller.
