Sister Jean Chapman, O.P., 90, a member of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville, L.I., for 71 years, died Feb. 21. A Brooklyn native, she was raised in Richmond Hill.

She entered the novitiate in 1945 and received the habit and her religious name, Sister Mary Arnold, the following year.

She taught at Sacred Heart in East Glendale; St. Catherine of Siena, St. Albans; St. Pancras, Glendale; St. Bartholomew, Elmhurst; and St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa.

From 1977 to 1978, she was a member of the community at Emmaus House of Prayer at St. Joseph, Sullivan County.

In 1978, she resumed teaching elementary grades at St. Hugh of Lincoln, Huntington Station; Little Flower, Montauk Beach; and St. Luke, Whitestone.

Beginning in 1992, she became a school librarian at Our Lady of Solace, Coney Island; St. Frances Cabrini, Bensonhurst; and St. Mark, Sheepshead Bay.

Illness forced retirement in 1998, but she continued to conduct seasonal programs and also tutored children who needed special help. In 2003, she moved to Carlin Hall at the motherhouse.

Burial was in the Sisters’ cemetery in Amityville.
