Greenpointer Named LAOH Natl President
Congratulations to Mary Hogan, who was elected national president of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) at the AOH/LAOH national convention held recently in St. Louis. A member of Division 6, Greenpoint, for over 20 years, Hogan has held offices on the local, state and national level. She urged fellow Hibernians to become more involved in their local communities and family Irish histories. LAOH members from Division 19, Gerritsen Beach, and Division 22, Bay Ridge, traveled to the convention to show their support for Hogan, seated.
Hogan’s supporters, standing, from left to right: Rose Coulson, Judy Rose, Tricia Santana, Louise Sullivan, Kathryn Keane, Joann Gundersen, Patricia Sullivan-Jakubauskas, Christina Parisi, Joan Parisi and Sister Virginia Lake, C.S.J. Not pictured: Barbara Wasserman, Div. 19 President.
On Monday, we observe Labor Day, and so it is most fitting to congratulate Father Russell Governale, O.F.M. Conv., on his new assignment. After four years as pastor at St. Adalbert, Elmhurst, Father Governale has been appointed vocation director for his province. He will relocate to Brooklyn and take on the important work of inviting young men to consider a Franciscan way of life. Parishioners and friends will have a chance to wish him well following all of this weekend’s Masses at St. Adalbert.
Local Italians and Italian-Americans will celebrate the popular Feast of La Madonna Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), patroness of Mola di Bari, Italy, on Sept. 14.
The Congrega Maria SS. Addolorata group at Sacred Hearts-St. Stephen Church, Carroll Gardens, will conduct its 66th annual street procession in honor of Our Lady on Sept. 14, beginning at 2:30 p.m. and returning for 6:30 p.m. Mass. For more details, call the parish at 718-596-7750.
And in Bensonhurst, L’Associazione Culturale Pugliese Figli Maria SS. Addolorata at St. Athanasius will honor the Sorrowful Mother with a novena, Sept. 5-13, followed by a street procession and high Mass with Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto, Sept. 14, starting at 2:15 p.m. For more information, call 917-509-2803.
Registration is open for the 26th annual P.O. Christopher Hoban Memorial Run, set for Sept. 21 at Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge. The Hoban Run, a 5-mile run which is now a tradition in Bay Ridge, supports a memorial scholarship fund to honor Hoban, a Xaverian H.S. alumnus and NYPD officer, who lost his life in the line of duty in 1988 at the age of 26. Register for the race, the hat run, kids dashes and after-party at www.hobanrun.com. For more information, call Xaverian H.S. at 718-836-7100 ext. 197.
Tablet TALK Quote of the Week (for Labor Day): “God give me work, till my life shall end/And life, till my work is done.” – Epitaph of Winifred Holtby
This week’s Tip of the Tablet TALK Top Hat goes to the final graduates of Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope: John Drake and Rigoberto Gomez Jr., two high school juniors who worked hard this summer to graduate a year early.
When these young men learned that their high school would close this June, they accepted an opportunity to engage in an accelerated course of study, which they completed this summer.
On Aug. 21, the young men donned caps and gowns and received the last two Bishop Ford diplomas to ever be issued. Both will attend St. Joseph’s College, Clinton Hill.
And don’t forget that the Great Irish Fair is only two weekends away – Sept. 13-14 in Coney Island. For more details, visit www.gifnyc.org.
Gratitude for Parish Youth
In Gerritsen Beach
They work hard year-round to enhance the quality of liturgical celebrations, and so Resurrection parish, Gerritsen Beach, decided to celebrate and thank the parish altar servers and Joyful Noise youth choir with a summer barbecue. Boys and girls enjoyed food, games and much laughter under sunny skies on the parish grounds.
