Bishop DiMarzio is Right: Deterrence Alone Won’t Fix Immigration
Dear Editor: In his Oct. 16 column, “Immigration Restrictions and the Great Depression’s Economic Lessons,” Bishop Emeritus Nicholas DiMarzio makes a persuasive case that American history points to a practical solution: give immigrant workers a way to gain legal status instead of relying on restrictive policies.
An effective system requires consistent interior enforcement, secure borders, and realistic legal channels for entry, work, and regularization.
As the article indicates, deterrence alone is not the solution.
Policies centered on restrictions often overlook the nation’s economic needs, humanitarian responsibilities, and core values.
Without sufficient legal pathways, people may resort to unsafe or unauthorized routes, leading to more alleged violations while leaving the causes of migration unresolved.
Confronting and addressing this shared challenge is essential so that the dignity of every person is respected.

Welcome Back! Father Lauder Helps Us See God in Everything
Dear Editor: How wonderful to see that Father Lauder’s column is back in The Tablet.
Father Lauder always brings the presence of God into everything his column is about. It can be a book, a poem, a painting, a film.
A wonderful reminder that God is everywhere and is infused in everything if we take the time to look.
I love reading Father Lauder’s columns and I’m so happy he is back.

I was lucky to get to venerate the relics when they came to a town near me in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, two weeks ago (“Long Lines, Deep Faith for Relics of St. Bernadette”). They were absolutely beautiful.
