VIDEO: Queens Native Learns Spanish, Supports Bright Christmas for Migrant Families

MANHATTAN — It’s not quite perfect, but Vickie Satlov is learning Spanish to do good.

“They came through some terrible, terrible places to come here because we are a shining beacon to the world,” Satlov said.

From her apartment in Manhattan, the Queens native is on a mission to become a more welcoming voice to the migrant families now calling New York home. Whether it’s greeting someone in their native language or something more quiet — like writing a check so kids who have already experienced such darkness can have a bright Christmas.

“Some of the parishes throw Christmas parties for the kids. It’s the only present they’re going to have. They put food in a food bank or pantry. Bright Christmas reminds us that we can all be Christ,” she said.

After more than 20 years in banking technology at J.P. Morgan, Satlov knows it doesn’t take millions to make a real difference in a child’s life.

“A mailman and an administrative assistant. Growing up we didn’t have a lot. I want you to wake up on Christmas morning and I want you to feel how I felt when my parents put presents under the tree for us,” Satlov said.

“Necesitas ayuda,” Satlov repeated. Her question is simple.

“Read the letters that come in and tell me that you don’t think Bright Christmas is making a difference.”

Her answer even simpler.

“It isn’t how much you give,” she said. “It’s that you give.”
