VIDEO: Brooklyn Artist Keeps Christ in Christmas With Bold Greeting Cards
PARK SLOPE — Most Christmas cards play it safe — but Mike Miranda isn’t interested in safe; he’s interested in the truth.
His original series of greeting cards has familiar colors, classic themes, and some very direct words.
“Christmas cards today are ‘season’s greeting’ cards or ‘happy holiday’ cards, and they have pictures of sleigh rides in the winter and cardinals and snowmen and all that stuff. But it really has nothing to do with Christ.” Miranda said.
Inspired by an ad he saw for the Knights of Columbus’ Keep Christ in Christmas campaign, Mike, a career art director and designer, decided to launch a campaign of his own, spreading the message through a holiday tradition he says often leaves out the most important part.
“I’m a churchgoer. I want more people to become aware of what Christmas is all about. I think there’s a limited but a very real market for people that still understand that Christmas is all about Christ or should be all about Christ,” he said.
With sayings like “Boycott Xmas” and “This is not a Merry Xmas card,” the message leaves no room for confusion.
“Once you start thinking about Christ and the golden rule, basically, love your neighbors as you love yourself — if everybody in the world did that, we’d have no wars,” Miranda said.
At 85, Miranda is still drawing a line in the sand — and it runs straight through the letter X.
