The Church Is Always Here for Couples

Dear Editor: We wanted to take this opportunity to thank The Tablet, and your writer, Paula Katinas, for her article (“Couples Mass Helps Strengthen Relationships,” Mar.14) about the couples’ Masses at Our Lady of Grace Church in Howard Beach.

Father Dominick Dellaporte, our pastor, doesn’t just invite married couples, rather he invites engaged and dating couples to come to Mass together and pray for their relationships.

Father Dominick began these special Masses back in January. At each one there has been a reflection given by a couple on marriage in Scripture.

At the last Mass, Chris and I spoke about the many ways the Catholic Church helps couples — at all stages. Pre Cana, Engaged Encounter, weekend retreats for couples, Retrouvaille and Marriage Encounter.

Our Church helps us always!

Thank you again to Paula Katinas and The Tablet for taking the time to come to our parish and get the word out about the importance of couples — at all stages of their relationships, in our Church.

Currents News Is the News Show We Need

Dear Editor: Currents News is a resource for me and all the people they reach, bringing us up to date with all the wonderful happenings in a world when so much religion is needed and so many unnoticed events are taking place.

It is helping people to connect to their faith with everyday occurrences. It encourages people with hope for their trials and tribulations and makes others thank God for their blessings.

The incredible reporting on Currents News has inspired me to watch every night (in spite of the fact that Jeopardy is on at the same time).

The sincerity, clarity, and proficient coverage of every story is amazing. Their following of all the important religious people they so diligently discover, who are so dedicated to our religion and get such little notice in everyday news is so important. For example, I personally admire the “Pulse of the Parish” coverage. I am so happy they give these people all the recognition they deserve.

The recent coverage of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen was exceptional. I am looking forward to seeing his beatification on Sept. 24.

I watched Bishop Sheen every week when he was on television and I am lucky to actually know someone from my era becoming a saint. “Life is Worth Living” was his theme and so worth-while. I wish his homilies would be shown more today.

I am also so happy to see their new look and set design, although I am aware it is computer-generated. It is a much more suitable background for their impressive stories and well-deserved for all their hard work.

No Politics Please

Dear Editor: Each week I look forward to reading Father Robert Lauder’s column. I have learned so much over the years.

Thus, it pains me to criticize him for attending the “No Kings” protest (“Witness to the Call of Conscience – Again,” Mar.28).

Priests should speak out about moral issues like immigration or abortion.

Father Lauder attended the “No Kings” protest because of the administration’s immigration policies.

However, the protest was not centered on any specific policy but was in general an anti-Trump rally which is why I have a problem with Father Lauder’s participation.

Priests should not be involved in any political activity that is pro or against any politician. It is a distraction from their calling.

Editor’s note: As Father Robert Lauder wrote in his column, “One reason is because of the leadership of Pope Leo XIV and the American bishops, both of whom have been critical of the present way that immigrants are being treated in this country. I am hoping that a large turnout of protesters will move the current administration of our country to change the way that immigrants are being treated.”
