Father Luke Wei, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, died on Oct. 24 at age 91.

Father Wei, who was born Jan. 4, 1934, and ordained to the priesthood on July 2, 1960, served the Diocese of Brooklyn as parochial vicar for the parishes of St. Finbar (Bath Beach), Our Lady of Refuge (Flatbush), St. Frances Cabrini (Bensonhurst), and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs (Forest Hills).

He was born in China and entered formation at a young age. After the communists took over in 1949, he continued his seminary education in Taiwan.

He then entered the major seminary in Hong Kong and was ordained there. Father Wei ministered to Chinese refugees in South Korea.

He came to Brooklyn in 1967 and was incardinated into the diocese in 1970.

He served almost 15 years at St. Frances Cabrini Church and over 20 years at St. Finbar Church.

Father Joseph Holcomb, the director of seminarians for the diocese, was formerly pastor of St. Finbar’s.

He remembered Father Wei as a priest who “loved generously — not with sentimentality, but with the steady, patient love that comes from a lifetime of prayer.”

Father Holcomb said that what defined Father Wei was “not what he built with his hands — it was what he built with his heart.”

He added that Father Wei “could see goodness in people even when they couldn’t see it in themselves.”

The funeral Mass for Father Wei was celebrated on Nov. 14 at St. Finbar Church.

Bishop Robert Brennan was the principal celebrant, and Father Holcomb was the homilist.

Burial followed at St. John Cemetery, Middle Village.
