Sister Elaine Nolan, S.C. (formerly Sister Mary Elaine), a Sister of Charity- Halifax for 69 years, died at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, Massachusetts, on July 6 at the age of 87.
Born in Boston, Sister Elaine was missioned to Saint Sebastian School, Woodside, New York, from 1957-60 and taught fifth grade during those years. She was also missioned to Washington State, Massachusetts, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, during her career in education and art. During that time, Sister Elaine spent a year of study, pursuing courses in art, which was one of her deep passions.
Among her many interests, Sister Elaine was very involved with the Sisters of Charity Associates and earlier served on the Congregation’s Formation Team in the Boston area. She worked on many art projects for the congregation, designing symbols for chapter, assemblies, and other events. She formally retired in 2005 and continued her artistic endeavors. Beginning in 2005, Sister Elaine sold photos, paintings, and original cards at various sales sponsored by Mount Saint Vincent, Wellesley, Massachusetts. She moved to Marillac Residence in 2021.
The Mass for Christian Burial was celebrated on July 11 at Mount Saint Vincent, followed by interment at Saint Mary Cemetery, Needham, Massachusetts.
Sister Anne Connor (formerly Sister Mary Gertrude), died on July 10 at McAuley Convent in Merion, Pennsylvania, at age 91, in the 72nd year of her religious life.
Anne was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, and immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1950s. Shortly thereafter, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in Syosset, New York. Her first years in community were spent in child care at the Convent of Mercy and Angel Guardian Home.
She later taught at St. Gregory, Crown Heights (1966-71); St. Brigid, Ridgewood (1972-78); St. Martin de Porres, Bedford- Stuyvesant (1978-79); and as a Special Education teacher in the Wantagh Public Schools. Upon retiring from teaching, she began a new ministry as a social work assistant at Our Lady of Consolation Geriatric Center in West Islip, New York, until 2003.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone, followed by burial in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
