Msgr. Terrence J. Mulkerin, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, was born on Sept. 29, 1935, ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1961, and died Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. Msgr. Mulkerin served the Diocese of Brooklyn as Parochial Vicar for the parishes of Incarnation (Queens Village), St. Paul (Brooklyn), and Our Lady of Lourdes (Queens Village).
He was also in residence at the parishes of Holy Name of Jesus (Brooklyn) and Saint Joseph Labre (Richmond Hill). Msgr. Mulkerin served as the director of the Missions Office and, for 20 years, was a Military Chaplain of the U.S. Navy. He received the honor of Chaplain of His Holiness in 2012.
“Msgr. Mulkerin once said he ministered so many years as a Navy chaplain because he wanted to be a presence for all those in the military who were away from home and away from the sacraments,” said his friend, Deacon Matt Oellinger, Coordinator of Senior Priest Services for the Diocese of Brooklyn. “He would encourage young priests he met to become chaplains in the Armed Forces.”
Deacon Oellinger said Msgr. Mulkerin spent his final years at the Bishop Mugavero Residence at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, Queens.
A funeral Mass was held Thursday, Oct. 27, at Immaculate Conception Center, followed by burial at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.
Sister Edna Clark, S.C. (Sister Robert Virginia), a Sister of Charity- Halifax for 62 years, died at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, Massachusetts, on Oct. 8 at the age of 81. She is survived by her sister Mary Zogott of East Quoque, New York.
Sister Edna spent all of her ministry years in her native New York except for four years teaching Grade 1 at Holy Saviour School, Westmont, New Jersey, from 1963-67. Sister Edna Clark was missioned at St. Paul School, Brooklyn, from 1967-76, and Our Lady of Angels, Brooklyn, from 1976-83. In 1983, Sister Edna worked at the Sisters of Charity-Halifax office in St. Sylvester Parish, Brooklyn, and became proficient in computer administration during this time.
In 1992, Sister Edna brought her talents to St. John’s University-Staten Island as a coordinator/training specialist. She remained at St. John’s University until 2008, except for a sabbatical year in 2004- 05. Sister Edna was a faithful parishioner of Saint Andrew Parish, Brooklyn, and Our Lady of Angels, Brooklyn, during the many years that she lived on Shore Road in Bay Ridge. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 15 at Saint Paul Church, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Interment followed at Saint Mary Cemetery, Needham, Massachusetts.
Sister Nicholas Campasano, nee Mary Campasano, Sister of Christian Charity, died Monday, Oct. 24, at age 89, at the Motherhouse in Mendham, New Jersey.
Sister Nicholas was born on July 7, 1933, in Brooklyn. She attended St. Benedict Grammar School in Brooklyn, Cathedral Annex in the Bronx, Immaculata High School and Assumption College for Sisters in Mendham. She entered the Community as a candidate on September 3, 1950. Sister received her Holy Habit on August 21, 1953, and went on to profess her Final Vows on August 21, 1959.
Sister taught in Jersey City, Chatham, and Hackettstown, New Jersey; Philadelphia; the Bronx and Kingston, New York. A liturgy of Christian Burial was held Oct. 29 at the Chapel of Mary Immaculate Motherhouse, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
