Sports Round-Up Jan. 22

Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, has two boys’ basketball players who are sons of NBA players. Kiyan Anthony, son of Los Angeles Lakers forward Carmelo Anthony, is playing for the Royals’ freshman team, while Justin Barkley, son of former 10-year NBA veteran guard Erick Barkley, plays on the junior varsity team. Erick Barkley also played at Christ the King before heading to St. John’s University, Jamaica.


St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, women’s basketball guard Khaleah Edwards scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 6. The graduate student is the second Terriers’ women’s basketball player to accomplish the feat this season, with fifth year forward Ally Lassen tallying 1,000 on Dec. 5.


The Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn and Queens held its boys’ swimming championships Jan. 8 at the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center, East Meadow, L.I. Here are the results from the championship meet:

1st Place: AOK, 635 points (St. Kevin, Flushing/St. Anastasia, Douglaston/Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside/Sacred Heart, Bayside)

2nd Place: OLAN, 543 points (Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park/St. Andrew the Apostle, Bay Ridge)

3rd Place: St. Sebastian, 498 points (Woodside)


Lou Iorio, the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) parish athletic representative (PAR) at Resurrection Ascension, Rego Park, died Jan. 9. Prior to serving as PAR, he coached basketball for more than 20 years at the parish.

“Lou gave his heart and soul to our sports program and made it the great success it is today,” says a statement on the parish school’s Facebook page.

“He was a CYO lifer who was beloved by his parish and other parishes,” said Phil McBride, a CYO basketball coach for over 50 years.
