Great Moments of the Past
We just passed the anniversary of 19-year MLB veteran John Candelaria’s no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 9, 1976. A member of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time, the Brooklyn-born lefty turned in a stellar performance to record the Pirates’ first no-hitter since 1907. For the “Candy Man,” his baseball journey began at Holy Innocents parish, Flatbush, where he pitched at the Parade Grounds. The 66-year-old pitched for nine team and was an MLB All-Star in 1977 and World Series champion in 1979.
The St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, Athletics Department announced that it will be virtually packing the Daniel Lynch Gymnasium at the Pope Physical Education Center this summer. Tickets are available now, and all proceeds go directly toward the St. Francis Athletics Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund.
St. Francis athletic supporters, alumni, family members, friends, administrators, staff, faculty and student-athletes can help Pack the Pope by purchasing one or more tickets, which are available in increments of $10.
