Anthony Watson, a senior swimmer at St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, has
committed to swim for Division I Manhattan College, the Bronx, in the fall. He finished his high school swimming career as the school’s all-time record holder in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.78) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.11).
“Anthony is a tremendous athlete and an all-around great person,” said Eagles head coach Danielle Johnson. “He is respectful, hardworking, ambitious and shows great sportsmanship. We all wish him luck and look forward to rooting our alumnus on at his future meets. We
know he will blow them out of the water.”
Becir Hot, a 6-foot 2-inch senior guard on the St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, boys’ varsity basketball team, will be continuing his hoops career this fall at St. Joseph’s College, Patchogue, L.I.
Great Moments of the Past
The start of the 1995-1996 NBA season featured a nod to our local Catholic Youth Organization basketball league. Two expansion franchises – the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies – began play, and the head coach of both teams had ties to our diocesan parishes.
Brian Winters of St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, and Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, was tapped to lead the Grizzlies, while Brendan Malone of Most Precious Blood, Astoria, coached the Raptors.
