Sister Annmarie McNicholl,a native of Jackson Heights who was a Carmelite sister for 62 years, died on June 29 at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. She was 80.She is survived by her sister-in-law, Christina McNicholl, and her four nieces: Michelle Raia, Lisa McNicholl, Denise McNicholl Bankson, and Christina Bell.
After taking her vows as a Carmelite in 1957, Sister Annemarie graduated from NYU with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. After graduation, she proceeded to dedicate her life to the church and to a career in healthcare and eldercare at a variety of hospitals and nursing homes, including St. Patrick’s Nursing Home, Boston; St. Rita’s Nursing Home, Columbus, Ohio; Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home, New York City; Madonna Residence, Brooklyn; Carmelite Sisters Long-Term Care, Germantown, New York; Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, Bronx.In 1987, she became part of the Society of Sisters for the Church.
An avid volunteer, Sister Annemarie also served on the Board of directors for the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, the Catholic Charities of Brooklyn, and on the National League for Nursing.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel of Providence Rest Sisters of John the Baptist on Thursday, August 1stat 10:30 am.
