Dear Editor: Ed Wilkinson, in his column of Sept. 15, accuses the Catholic social justice group Network of a lack of knowledge of the proper roles of the different branches of government. One of the proper roles of the legislative branch of the government is to consent to, or deny, the application of any judge for a position on the supreme court. Therefore Network has every right to express its opinion to the legislature regarding Judge Kavanaugh’s application.
There is no “slideshow” going on here. Judge Kavanaugh’s past record on health care, immigration, labor rights, and voting rights are serious issues. Possible future court cases regarding these issues can affect thousands of U.S. citizens many more people then are affected by Judge Kavanaugh’s charitable activities.
It’s high time that members of the supreme court be elected by the people for a definite period of time. What’s good for the executive and legislative branches of government should be good enough for the judicial branch as well.
