Catholic Charities’ St. John XXIII Senior Services – Quality, Compassion and a Coordinated Approach
Thinking about elder care for loved ones is a daunting task. There are so many factors to consider; everything from types of services and facilities, to staff, caretakers and understanding the changing needs of aging community.
Saint John XXIII Senior Services, a program through the Diocese of Brooklyn by Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens and related agencies, provides all seniors and their families with ready access to the full array of senior services accessible by contacting the Catholic Charities Call Center.
Ready Access to Array of Services
The Catholic Charities Call Center connects seniors and their families to senior centers, social adult day programs for seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, case management and home delivered meals for the homebound elderly, friendly visiting, and more information on senior housing programs. Direct access is also available to the Saints Joachim & Anne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ozanam Hall Nursing Center and Family Home Care Services and Care at Home.
Catholic Charities’ Senior Centers, funded by the NYC Department for the Aging, provide seniors age 60 and older with nutritious meals, healthy aging programs including exercise classes, entitlement and benefits counseling, computer classes, cultural activities and events, trips, transportation services and more.
Services for the Homebound Elderly include care management plans, home delivered meals, assessment for homecare, support services to keep frail seniors living safely in their homes, and community and friendly visiting.
Adult Day Programs
Catholic Charities also offers social adult day programs, for those age 60 and over who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.
Catholic Charities is the region’s largest provider of affordable senior housing, currently offering 22 senior housing buildings with 2,186 units. Residents take part in a wide range of activities and events, including health fairs and workshops, and residents are provided with opportunities for education, socialization and recreation.
Independent and Assisted Living
Residences also offer a vital link to social services and instill a sense of home, community and family. Federally subsidized independent living is available for low-income seniors (age 62 and older) and mobility impaired adults. Requests for an application must be made in writing to the central office, by contacting Saint John XXIII Senior Services.
For over 20 years, the Catholic Charities Saints Joachim & Anne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has provided elderly residents with 24-hour, high-quality nursing and medical care from board-certified physicians.
The nursing and rehabilitation center is a 200 bed non-profit, non-sectarian health care facility overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in historic Coney Island. The center provides compassionate care and a welcoming setting for both short-term and long-term care residents.
Family Home Care Services of Brooklyn and Queens and Care at Home of New York provides at-home care to over 2,500 elderly and disabled clients each year. Services provided include nursing supervision, personal care aide, 24/7 supervision and case service management by a registered nurse, and more.
Located in Bayside, the Ozanam Hall Nursing Home of Queens specializes in short-term rehabilitation as well as skilled geriatric care.
A Voice in Civic Affairs
To engage communities and develop a deeper understanding of the needs of seniors, especially the most urgent needs, and how to find ways to address them, Saint John XXIII Seniors Services created a task force in Brooklyn and Queens.
This also provides a platform for the voices of senior citizens to be heard in regard to legislation and other civic matters that impact their lives and are important to them.
Through Saint John XXIII Senior Services, families can rest assured that their loved ones will have access to quality and compassionate services.
