Sister Joan Doody, R.S.M.

Sister Joan Doody, R.S.M., 87 a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 70 years, died at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, Jan. 20.

Born in Jamaica, she attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine School; Bishop McDonnell D.H.S, Crown Heights; and Catherine McAuley H.S., East Flatbush.

She entered the Mercy Sisters Novitiate in Syosset, L.I., in February, 1948 and professed final vows in September, 1953. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. John’s University, and a master’s in secondary education from Seton Hall University, N.J.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Basil, she taught at St. Therese of Lisieux School, East Flatbush, 1950-52; St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1954-60; Sacred Heart, Adelphi St., Carroll Gardens, 1960-61; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1961-63; Our Lady of Mercy, Hicksville, 1963-66, and 1975-2006; St. Joseph the Worker, Patchogue, 1966-69, and St. Agatha, Sunset Park, 1969-75.

She is survived by her sister, Ronnie (Mary), brother William and twin sister, Sister Janice Doody, R.S.M.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Flushing.
