Students from the Aquinas Honor Society at Immaculate Conception School, Jamaica, Estates, under the direction of their teacher and moderator, Carl Ballenas, wanted to replace a bronze bust of Jacob Riis which had been stolen from the park named in his honor in the Rockaways.
An anonymous donor gave students $10,000, which students used to commission a new statue, created by Brooklyn artist David Ostro and installed in 2010. The bust was given by the students to the City of New York and it now stands in Riis Park.
