TUCSON (Diocese of Tucson) —Surrounded by family, caregivers, and fellow residents, 98-year-old Raymond “Ray” Martin Sr. received the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation, in a single celebration at the Villas of Marana on July 16.

Deacon Jack Trevino of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish baptized Martin after accompanying him on his journey of faith. Father Edson of St. Christopher Catholic Parish celebrated his First Holy Communion and Confirmation, with a dispensation from Bishop Misko for the Confirmation.

Martin’s daughter, Joanne, son-in-law, Michael, staff, fellow residents, and seminarian Josue Limon were present for the celebration. Deacon Trevino said Martin was reverent and teary-eyed throughout the rite and deeply grateful to Father Edson. Joanne shared that the sacraments brought her father great peace and comfort.

Martin is a World War II Army veteran who served in Okinawa and the Philippines, and he went on to spend 27 years as a police officer in Illinois. For years, he attended Mass and prayed the rosary alongside his late wife, Ann Marie. According to Deacon Trevino, Martin always believed, but found it difficult to open up about his faith until now.

At 98, Martin’s reception into the Catholic Church is a joyful reminder that it is never too late to embrace God’s grace.
