Dear Editor: We, the family of Bishop Rene A. Valero, would like to publicly acknowledge the Bishop Mugavero Residence of the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, N.Y., for taking such good care of Uncle Rene in his retirement.
At the residence in Douglaston, retired priests reside in well-appointed renovated rooms equipped with Wifi. They enjoy communal prayer, library, food service, and exercise facilities including a pool – everything befitting their retirement.
It is the intention of Deacon Matthew to keep retired priests in community, a way of life these priests have known since entering the seminary.
Through the generosity of the Lawler Foundation, a car service is provided for priests who do not drive. Medical care and physical therapy are available on the premises. For those who need more help, the dedicated staff of loving, caring nurse-companions goes beyond the call of duty.
The care of retired diocesan priests is a mission for us all. We are fortunate in our diocese to have the Bishop Mugavero Residence to fulfill this calling.
